Children in this group are generally in the last years of elementary school. There is an increasing demand for skilled working in inquiry based cooperative groups for science, math and often literacy. Kids needs to be able to analyze material, form an opinion and support a position using evidence and examples, tell the reasons why something happened, and sometimes compare and contrast different positions. This is incredibly demanding and requires the ability to engage in shared thinking while forming your own opinion, understanding the difference between your opinion and fact, and communicating that in a socially skilled way. The program for the advanced group offers simulated school experiences such as literacy discussions and science experiments to help them develop these skills in a supported scaffolded environment. Also included is continued work on emotional regulation using the exercises in Mindfulness and additional work from Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Work on friendship building is also featured prominently with understanding how to relate to others based on level of social connection. This group also includes some beginning work on executive function skills and homework management. Each session is one hour long with a short lesson, applied activity and coached "free time" at the end of the session. Each session also includes "parent talk time" with information provided to parents on the content of the lesson and applications of the material.
This group is designed for a mix of boys and girls and has some openings as of 8/24/17.
