Children in our intermediate group are often in second and third grade. As children move into these grade levels, there is increased demand for social skills as they begin working in groups more, play more in pairs or groups on the playground and begin to develop real friendships. Our programming for this group builds those skills through building awareness of levels of social connection, social communication skills, and emotional regulation skills so necessary when there are increased demands for school work, independent functioning and beginning group work. We use materials from Social Thinking Curricula including The Unthinkables, and Power Plans, to help them learn to see challenges and and grow socially in a way that is fun and non-threatening. We also use exercises drawn from the Mind Up Curriculum for 3rd and 4th grade other tools from Dialectical Behavior Therapy like Mindfulness and using self-soothing strategies from Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Each session is one hour and includes a short lesson, an applied activity and guided play interaction. Each one hour session also includes 15 minutes of "parent talk time" covering the content of the lesson and applications.
This group is full for the 2017-18 school year.
