Primary Group is for children who are generally first grade age. The Primary Group Program features Social Thinkings Preschool and Primary Curriculum. Children are exposed to a fun, and active curriculum which teaches very basic social thinking information including the concepts that people have thoughts and feelings, shared thinking, understanding "the group plan", and "friendly" and "unfriendly" behaviors. There is also work on identifying feelings, both your own and recognizing the cues we get from others about how they feel about what we just said or did. Social communication skills are taught to enable children to connect with each other through verbal and nonverbal communication.
Emotional regulation is taught using concepts like "checking in" with your body and your feelings, observing and describing your feelings, and managing big feelings. We use the Mind UP Curriculum for 1st and 2nd grade in addition to work from Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Each session features a very short lesson , an applied activity and guided play to build connections. A 15 minute "parent talk time" with information about the content of the lesson and applications is included.
This group has two openings for 1st grade girls as of 8/24/17.
